How our Coating Process Works

Plasma provides a variety of engineering services as well as manufacturing services. Our highly experienced engineering staff, with over 100 years combined material and manufacturing experience, help guide our customers through research and development all the way until high-rate production. We consult on design for manufacturability (DFM), performing trade studies on materials (development and test), suggest best processes based upon performance, quality, and cost/schedule requirements, and help create process specifications to lead into standardization for high-rate production.

We have extensive knowledge in performing work with our customers for commercial and government contracts. Our team performs advanced program management during our projects. During the development phase, Plasma outlines any and all possible risks. We then help support trade studies, coupon tests, and/or other methods to reduce risk upfront after identified. Then in production and throughout the contract, Plasma identifies technological development and critical path schedule targets through risk assessment. Our team follows standard procedures for program management and reports to customers any identified risks through standard reviews and identified Risk Matrices with their corresponding plans based upon internal and external inputs as defined by the contract. Plasma then reviews these in-house and with customers on weekly, monthly, and/or quarterly schedules depending on final contract requirements. If any priority/emergency items are identified, other communication or meetings may be scheduled.

Throughout this process, we follow customers and government guidelines and are very familiar with the development process of Systems Requirements Review (SRR), Concept Design Review (CDR1), Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review (CDR2), and Manufacturing Readiness Review (MRR) while then transitioning these efforts to qualification into production. During production, our team is trained to look for continuous improvement plans to reduce costs and improve performance. We are eager to serve your needs and guide your designs to the highest capability in performance while meeting cost and schedule requirements.

Plasma Spray (VPS)
Vacuum Plasma Spray offers the following advantages over conventional atmospheric plasma process:
  • Broader and longer spray jets
  • Cleaner interfaces through reverse transfer arc sputter cleaning
  • Oxide-free coatings
  • High coating densities (close to theoretical)
  • Low residual stresses
  • Increased deposition thickness capability (>25mm or 1 inch)
  • High substrate/deposit preheating capability
Cold Spray
Vacuum Plasma Spray offers the following advantages over conventional atmospheric plasma process:
